For this weeks Transformation Tuesday, the topic will be the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels were founded in 1961 in the American League. They have won one World Series in 2002, one Pennant and won the West Division title 9 times. The Angels name came from the English translation of "Los Angeles", which mean "The Angels" in Spanish.
The team made a name change in 1965 by former owner Gene Autry to the California Angels in recognition of their upcoming move to a newly constructed Anaheim Stadium to start the 1966 season. Then in 1997 when Walt Disney bought the team, they renovated the stadium and changed the name to the Anaheim Angels. But in 2005, new owner Arturo Moreno added "Los Angeles" to the team's name to become the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim despite fans and municpal government objecting to the name with the City of Anaheim pursing litigation, nevertheless, the change was eventually upheld in court and the city dropped its lawsuit in 2009. Finally, in 2013, the team officially dropped "of Anaheim" from it name, as part of a new Angel Stadium lease negotiated with the Anaheim city government.
